Nicolas, an interdisciplinary performance artist, began studying traditional Conjunto music with Master Accordionist Valerio Longoria, Sr. at the age of 9. By 15 years of age he was an active member of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s youth theater company, Grupo Animo, writing and performing in original staged works. Nicolas later attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he studied classical theater. Over the years, Nicolas has developed his own unique performance style, incorporating music, poetry and theater into culturally relevant performances that speak to the experiences of the communities along the US-Mexico border.
Nicolas is also a co-founder of the San Antonio-based band, Los Nahuatlatos, a Xicano Roots Fusion band that combines Conjunto, Son Jarocho, Latin Jazz and R&B with contemporary elements of Hip-Hop, Ska, Reggae and Soul. Performing coast to coast, Nicolas has many ongoing collaborations with musicians, artists and performance groups around the country. His most recent project, Conjunto Blues, is a multi-disciplinary theatrical production that speaks to the social-historical conditions that led to the evolution of Conjunto music as an expression of cultural resistance and liberation. Conjunto Blues made its World Premier in Denver, Colorado in 2013.
